Africa Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (AKTP)

Africa Knowledge Transfer Partnerships (AKTP) is a British Council programme built on a very successful UK model. It is currently being piloted in Uganda, Ghana, Nigeria and Kenya and facilitates science and technology partnerships between private sector organisations and higher education institutions in Sub Saharan Africa and the UK.

Eligibility

The AKTP partnerships involve African companies collaborating with African universities, generally in the same country. They employ graduate associates, who are recruited locally and employed by the company for two years.

In addition to the primary collaboration between the company and the university, the programme also provides for linkage between the participating African academics and academics from the UK.

The projects are normally around 2 years in duration and UK academics are asked to make a short (3 or 4 days) scoping visit, in which they meet the partners and associate, and visit the company and the university.

Applications from UK academics at postdoctoral level and above in various fields, including (but not limited to) toxicology, food science, crop science and genetics, are particularly encouraged.

Amount Awarded

British Council will cover the following costs of the UK academic:

  • Return economy airfares
  • Travel to & from airports & in-country travel
  • Visa & vaccinations (where appropriate)
  • Accommodation (3 star) & subsistence costs

The academic’s time is not paid.
