Welcome to the Africa Unit
Welcome to the Africa Unit website. The Africa Unit is based at the Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) in the UK. It is funded by the Department of Business Innovation and Skills (BIS), previously the Department of Innovation, Universities & Skills (DIUS), and the Department for Employment and Learning Northern Ireland (DELNI). It aims to promote, facilitate and enhance partnerships between African and UK Higher and Further education institutions (HE/FE). The purpose of this website is to help educational institutions both in Africa and the UK create new partnerships and strengthen existing partnerships by providing information, advice and support.
The Africa Unit website currently includes:
- An updatable searchable Database of Existing UK and African HE/FE partnerships;
- A Webform for institutions to provide information about their current partnerships to be added to the Existing Partnerships Database;
- An updatable searchable database of Funding Schemes relevant to UK-Africa partnerships;
- A 'Search for a Partner' facility allowing UK and African institutions to provide information about their institutions and future projects for which they need a UK or African HE/FE partner institution.

- Good Practices in Educational Partnerships Guide
The launch of the Africa Unit's 'Good Practices in Educational Partnerships Guide: UK-Africa Higher & Further Education Partnerships' has arrived. The main reason behind the preparation and publication of the Guide, is the lack of knowledge and data about the scope, nature and depth of UK-Africa partnerships in this area. The Guide does not set out to present a set of universal, objective rules to be followed and which will guarantee success. Instead, it identifies valuable 'principles of management and good governance' which have been the driver behind a number of successful and sustainable UK-Africa partnerships and which can therefore inform future partnerships. Whilst we hope that many will find the Guide useful, we hope that African institutions will find it of particular value.
- The Africa Unit at Going Global 4
The Africa Unit's ‘Hit or Myth‘ workshop session was a roaring success, and kicked off to a full room of about 50 delegates at Going Global 4.
The session provided an opportunity to discuss how Further Education partnerships can act as a vehicle for promoting knowledge and sharing experience, allowing participants to share their knowledge and experience about the potential value of such partnerships for skills development between FE institutions in the UK and Africa.
To find out more about the Africa Unit's session at Going Global, please look out for our June Newsletter, where we shall be including an article on the success of our workshop.
